Historic Home Rehabilitation Program

Bring your architecturally significant home up to code with financial and construction project management support.

If you live in a qualifying historic district, you might be eligible for grant money that can help rehabilitate your home. Our certified construction project specialists will be with you from start to finish throughout the process, from permit applications to architectural planning and finishing touches.

Eligibility

The Historic Home Rehabilitation Program is available to owners of single- and multi-family properties within the Jefferson Park and Adams-Normandie districts. The properties must be designated by the city as historic.

Jefferson Park

The Jefferson Park historic district is located south of the 10 Freeway between Adams and Exposition Avenues, and between 8th and Western Avenues.

Adams-Normandie

The Adams-Normandie district is located south of the 10 Freeway between Normandie and Vermont Avenues and above 29th street.

How we can help

We help property owners obtain review and approval by Los Angeles City Planning for rehabilitation work. This may include preparing submission materials, such as architectural plans.

Our construction project management team will be with you throughout the process to recruit trusted contractors, manage deadlines, and see the project to completion.

Additionally, participants in this program will also be paired with a student in the Heritage Conservation and Architecture programs at USC. This student will help prepare required materials and can also serve as the property owner’s liaison with the city.

How to apply

To get started, fill out our intake form. Select Home Repair under Application Type.

More about the program

The Historic Home Rehabilitation Program is made possible through partnerships with USC, Los Angeles City Planning, and the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA).

The purpose of this program is to preserve and give new life to properties in qualifying historic districts throughout the city.

  • Within the City of Los Angeles, there are 35 local historic districts (Historic Preservation Overlay Zones). These districts have helped preserve and recognize the diverse architecture and history of the city.
  • Many of the houses and multi-family buildings in these districts are over 100 years old and need repairs. To make sure repair work, maintenance, or new construction preserves the character of the building, most work requires review by Los Angeles City Planning staff.
