Mission

Neighborhood Housing Services of Los Angeles County (NHS) serves as a catalyst for local residents, business and government representatives to work together to build stronger neighborhoods, improve the quality of life for low to moderate income families and revitalize communities into neighborhoods of choice.

NHS strengthens communities by developing and maintaining quality affordable housing, creating and preserving affordable homeownership opportunities, supporting local leaders, providing financial education and increasing the financial independence of families and people in need.

Our History

20210114_164133

Incorporated in 1984 as a member of the NeighborWorks Network, NHS has grown from a small local housing agency into the largest non-profit affordable homeownership provider in Southern California.

For 38 years, NHS has served clients and strengthened neighborhoods, helping to improve the quality of life for families in need. Since 1984, NHS has developed and rehabilitated more than 27,000 housing and commercial units, placed 4.8 million families on the road to homeownership, created 255 block clubs, employed over 265 neighborhood youth, and reinvested more than $8.5 billion back into some of Los Angeles County’s most underserved neighborhoods.

Before the foreclosure crisis, NHS worked primarily in revitalizing low-income neighborhoods destabilized by crime and gang violence that were experiencing business and economic divestiture. NHS has served the communities hardest hit by natural disasters, such as the 1994 Northridge earthquake, or public unrest, such as the damage caused by the 1992 Los Angeles riots, and economic disasters such as the 2008 Foreclosure Crises and 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic.

Today, the organization offers Financial Education and Counseling, Affordable Mortgage Lending, Construction Project Management Services, Mission-Driven Real Estate Services, and Neighborhood Revitalization & Advocacy.
